Essential Nintendo 64 List

If you didn't know it, I am an avid video game collector!

I recently asked my friend 64BitMatthew, a Nintendo 64 expert, to help me compile a list of essential Nintendo 64 games so I could focus my collecting. He surprised me with great list with descriptions on this topic! I pasted it here (after the jump) so I could refer to it in the future! Check it out!

Matt's exact FB message to me!

Hey bud! So I compiled a mini list of n64 games that are worth your time checking out. For the list, I tried to keep it to mostly games you havent heard of / wouldn't think are worth trying. So I didn't include any nintendo produced games, any wrestling games (as I know you remember which are worth playing), or any other games I figured you would know of (turoks, cruis n , nfl blitz, etc). Also, this is just a small list, there are still more gems out there. But I figured this would give you somewhere to start. Though make sure you grab the classics like mario tennis, mario kart 64, goldeneye 007, fzero x, both zeldas, waverace 64, etc. For most of the list below, most can be found for relatively cheap. The odd one does get a bit pricier, but only from stores that look up values, as most dont have the name title that comes with the auto inflated price. Anyway, enough rambling. Here are some of my personal favorites that arent talked about too much:
- beetle adventure racing - (very solid racing game, starting to get recognized more and more as a game worth buying. Lots of different paths to take, and finding all the hidden boxes will take some time)
- pokemon snap - (a fairly commonly known title, but I wanted to include it so that you knew not to skip it just cause its pokemon. Finding unique ways to get all the pokemon to appear to be photographed takes creative thinking, and trying to beat your pictures scores leads to a fair amount of replay-tivity) <---- pretty sure I made that word up
- toy story 64- (a fun 3d platformer, especially if you enjoyed the movies. you play as buzz, and there are quite a few levels, with several goals in each to accomplish. controls can be a bit iffy at times, but overall, a really fun game. and usually quite cheap to buy)
- star wars: shadow of empire - (a fun 3rd person shooter, even if you dont care much for star wars. has other level types too, like flying, racing, etc. Great game, and collecting everything gives this game replay-tivity too. Usually not too bad priced, but it is star wars, so that usually makes it not super cheap)
- jet force gemini - (another 3rd person shooter, that was well done as well. made by rare I believe. Not value priced too high yet, but I can see this one going up in the future)
- chameleon twist 1 and/or 2 - (a fun puzzle platformer game. you use the chameleons tongue to grab things, and move from platform to platform. kind of overhead, kind of side view. chameleon twist 1 is still pretty cheap, but 2 is harder to find, and commands a pretty decent price these days.)
- space station silicon valley - (another fun action puzzle style game. havent played it much lately, so cant comment too much, but it is a solid game)
- battle tanx and/or battle tanx: global assault - (both games are very solid multiplayer games. Havent spent much time single player though, so cant really comment on that. but I know two guys who to this day play these games for hours on end, so that should give credit to the longevity of its multiplayer mode)
- knockout kings 2000 - (fun boxing game, that can still be found for cheap. single player mode is fun, as you create a boxer, and build his stats as you fight to rise through the rankings. damage is applied each round, and the visuals for such is quite good (black eyes, cuts, etc). multiplayer is fun too. controls are great.)
- spiderman - (I played way more of the ps1 version of this game, but its technically the same game. solid play, good controls, and its spiderman. so if you like spiderman, im sure the game will be enjoyeable for you)
- hydro thunder - (great speedboat racing game. single player mode is fun, but i can see this game getting more use as a multiplayer game. decent amount of tracks and boats to choose from, and the gameplay and controls are good)
- wipeout 64 - (reminds me of fzero x, which is a good thing, as f-zero x is amazing. not quite as good, but still, a very solid game. if you like f-zero x, you should enjoy this game too. plus, its usually pretty cheap)
- star soldier, vanishing earth - (one of the few shmups on the n64, if not the only one. nothing amazing, but a solid game. this one can get pricey, but if found at the right place, its not one that gets talked about lots, so might score for cheap. if you like shmups, its worth keeping on your radar)
- knife edge, nose gunner - (not sure proper name for this type of gameplay, so its best to look on youtube for video of it. but its a fun shooter, one that i played more than i thought i would, and enjoyed more than i thought I would. I dont see this game often, but its not too rare or valuable, so if you see it for a good price, and you like the looks of it, its worth giving a shot)
